  • Precious Metal Weight: Approximately 2.20+ dwt
  • Precious Metal Material: 14k yellow gold and 14k white gold (two tone; yellow gold shank and face with white gold diamond settings)
  • Dimensions: circular face is 13.30 mm north to south x 13.25 mm east to west; ~5.50 mm rise from the finger (depth) at the highest point on the face (central diamond table); shoulders taper from 3.43 mm where they meet the circular face to 1.50 mm at the base of the shank
  • Weight: An impressive 3.53 grams
  • Markings: “14K WICKER...[?]” followed by a hand-inscribed "JC to Marie 3-26-55"
  • Era: This ring dates to c. 1950-1955, was likely a gift from a husband to his wife, who was clearly a very proud and active member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
  • Buyer Notes: This ring shows age-related wear, perfectly commensurate with its age and affectionate use. As pictured, the colored stones show some corner nibbles and chipping, and the green glass arm of the star is significantly more abraded than the others. These time-earned qualities have rendered these colored stones somewhat loose within their settings, and will ever so subtly sound if lightly jostled. The underside of the gallery may need reinforcement at some point. This ring is a fresh procurement by the shop, and given the complexities and abundance of due caution surrounding the presence of COVID-19, we have NOT had these characteristics addressed by a bench jeweler. As such, the ring is being sold as-is. Please read on for pricing details:
  • Pricing: This ring is, indeed, in need of a little TLC by its next caretaker if so desired, and/or is ripe for transformation with fresh colored gemstones, or perhaps new triangular faceted diamonds in the gemstones’ stead for a timeless and one of a kind engagement ring. Given these maintenance needs, we have combed the market-- from auctions to small business platforms, to high end antique jewelry dealers and secondhand collectors, to diamond wholesalers and many more-- to crunch our numbers appropriately. The pricing has been fairly set to reflect the immensely high quality of the diamonds only (excluding the spinels and glass), the weight and purity of the precious metal content, the collectability of mystic jewelry and pieces that include hand-inscribed personal messages, the copious symbolisms that steep this mysteriously sanctified jewel, and the rich history that it proudly exudes [please note that the assessed comparable value of these attributes has a baseline estimate between $5080 and $5250]. By purchasing, the buyer accepts this ring as it is, and understands the attributes described herein.

The Story:

This magnificent Mid Century Order of the Eastern Star (OES) ring is a stunning example of the ceremonious jewelry created for members of the Masonic organization. While the market abounds with multitudes of OES jewels, this ring stands out for the exceptionally high quality of its primary diamond gemstones-- which boasts a notably larger carat weight than most OES rings, and incredible G color and VVS clarity. The central diamond that decorates this celestial jewel is approximately 0.44 carats, blindingly bright and sparkling. It is housed in a pentagonal white gold setting, wherein each of the five corners assert a prong to secure the stone.

Extending from this large center diamond are five colorful rays which, together, form the shape of a five-pointed star. Each arm of the star is enhanced by a golden milgrain bezel and bursting with color, a particularly attractive complement to the rainbow refractions of the diamonds throughout. While the green arm is made of glass (now quite abraded after nearly 70 years of life), the other four colored arms are devised in lab created spinel-- considered a luxury alternative to natural spinel, as it could be produced to perfection under lab conditions while still technically maintaining the same chemical composition of its mined counterpart. Dotting the wedge-shaped spaces between the triangular arms are five more full cut diamonds, also of equally desirable color and clarity. These are mounted on raised white gold roundels and held by four prongs, and add a dimensionality to the low profile sleekness of the piece.

The OES was founded in 1850 and formally recognized in 1873, and has a long, complex history, rituals and belief structure. It is open to men and women over 18 years of age, and has a foundation in biblical leanings, though it is accepting of any religious affiliation. The founder of the organization referred to its chartered chapters as a ‘Supreme Constellation’, offering a glimpse into the origins of the jewels’ celestial reference. Of note is the ascendant symbolism imbued in this, and all, Eastern Star motif pieces, which is only truly understood by its members but has been dissected by jewelry historians for ages:

The star is emblematic of the female members, and is a spiritual symbol of the transfiguration of the Divine made human at the point of Christ’s birth, upon which the Star of Bethlehem shone. The star is also a symbolic relative to the planet Venus, which is also called the Eastern Star. This five pointed stylized shape is believed to have a corresponding acronym, wherein the five points are associated with the letters F.A.T.A.L., standing for “Fairest Among Thousands, Altogether Lovely” in reference to Song of Songs.

These points also reference leading female figures of the Holy Scriptures and their corresponding attributes worthy of reverence and simulation:

  1. Blue point: Adah, a descendent of Adam and the daughter of Jephthah according to the OES, whose name means ‘adornment’ and who reflects fidelity and the gift of music. She is represented by the symbols of the sword and the veil, which allude to the need for bravery in the name of good. Spring is her season, honoring youth and innocent beginnings.

  2. Yellow point: Ruth, a young widow and daughter-in-law to Naomi, whose name means ‘faithful friend’ and who reflects constancy and an expression of grace. She is represented by a sheaf of barley, which alludes to the collection of selfless deeds performed for others. Summer is her season, honoring growth and abundance.

  3. White/Clear point: Esther, the Jewish wife to Xerxes who became queen of the Persian empire, whose name means ‘star of joy’, and who reflects virtuous loyalty. She is represented by a scepter and crown, which allude to using authority for justice. She does not have a season association.

  4. Green point: Martha, the sister of Lazarus and May, whose name means ‘master lady’ and who reflects faith, active displays of religion. She is represented by a broken column, which alludes to faith even in the midst of grief and loss. Winter is her season, honoring reliance on God in the most lifeless of times.

  5. Red/Pink point: Electa, the addressee of John’s second letter in the New Testament, whose name derives from the Greek Εklektē, which means the ‘elected’ or ‘chosen lady, and who reflects love even through enduring persecution. She is represented by a chalice, which alludes to one’s allotted portions of grief and joy. Autumn is her season, honoring the lifelong pursuit of maturation.

According to the symbolic codes of the OES, one would appropriately wear this ring with the white or clear arm of the star pointing downward, so that the four seasonal heroines would radiate outward and everforth to the world around. As well, such an orientation ensures that one’s ‘foundation’ is the use of the gift of authority (spiritual and otherwise) for only good and the furtherance of the truth, for such is the divine infrastructure for all other virtues, fortitudes and beatitudes.

The intention of specially negotiated discounts, deals or sale prices through any platform between Revival Fine Jewelry and a designated customer, is to eliminate extra expenses and/or use of time and resources to formally list or re-list items per their specific and inherent value-determining qualities, as well as avoid unseen overhead business costs, stocking obligations, and all other disclosed or undisclosed monetary and nonmonetary expenditures.

Pricing: Revival Fine Jewelry reserves the right to decrease, increase, alter and modify inventory pricing to meet market rarity, demand or value; to offset platform, transaction or seller's fees; to adapt to economic inflation and fluctuation; and to defray specific business expenses. Pricing is the sole discretion of every small business.

Regarding Brooches & Pins: Often significantly and curiously undervalued jewelry items, brooches, pins and stick pins are treasured pieces of history in this shop. Accordingly, their pricing is calculated analogous to other fine jewelry, including their symbolic meaning, rarity and historical prestige. Such pieces are typically converted to other forms of jewelry, and are therefore becoming increasingly rare in their original states. Aside from being perfectly wearable as sophisticated lapel ornaments, brooches and pins of all kinds are prime candidates for many kinds of fine jewelry conversions, including rings, earrings, pendants, and charms, if so desired by the consumer post-purchase. Revival Fine Jewelry does not perform conversion projects for customers.

Regarding Storage & Boxes: All specifications, including but not limited to the measurements, age, origins, and material compositions are supplied in good faith as professional estimations constructed using professional grade tools, years of learned and honed skills, educational resources and academic scholarship, and refined research methods. Regardless of our confidence in our descriptions and the photographs deemed viable extensions of these descriptions, we cannot guarantee the definitiveness, faultlessness, or exactitude beyond our knowledge and expertise. Kindly keep in mind that this and all items are sold as-is vintage, antique and estate secondhand wares, and consequently bear conditional wear in matter and operation commensurate with age and use.
